Silves is one of the largest of the 16 municipalities in the Algarve and the city of Silves is the former capital of the region. It is a popular holiday destination and home to many Portuguese and immigrants from around the world. There is a lot to see and do in this area, from discovering the historic city to experiencing a tour of the spectacular caves along the coast of Armação de Pêra.
Whichever direction you take to enter the city of Silves, you will be greeted by the magnificent Moorish castle located above the maze of cobblestone streets – its red stone walls are a notable contrast to the white cathedral next to it. Silves has a lot of history and its long-standing reputation as a center of culture is evident through the small art galleries and craft shops that are spread throughout the city, and through the charming little musical events and the wonderful Mascarenhas Gregório Theater that has been restored, which presents a wide variety of theater productions and concerts throughout the year.
