Monchique is a Portuguese village in the district of Faro, region and sub-region of the Algarve, is the headquarters of a municipality with 395.30 ksqm of area and 5465 inhabitants (2021 census), subdivided into 3 parishes. The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipality of Odemira, to the east by Silves, to the south by Portimão, to the southwest by Lagos and to the west by Aljezur. The municipality of Monchique was created in 1773, by dismemberment of the municipality of Silves.
Basketry and weaving are the big part of Monchique's traditional craftsmanship. Because it is also a region rich in cork oaks, it is possible that there are also artisans working on cork.
Monchique is known for pig farming, and proof of this are the well-known sausages made with pork (sauce, flour or farinheira morcela, morcela and chorizo) and hams, exhibited annually at the Sausage Fair and ham fair.
It is also widely known the medronho brandy produced in this region, with its own brand, which attracts people from everywhere to taste it. Also sought after are liqueurs made with products from the region, the most typical liqueur drink of Monchique is called Melosa, which uses medronho brandy.
